Learning to sketch trees is a lot easier than you may think… Many budding artists of all ages are put off because they’ve only previously managed a ‘lollipop’ that they remember producing when they were at school. And yet, a lollipop isn’t a million miles away from many real trees in full summer foliage. You just need to know where to ‘tweak’ your sketch to make your lollipop look the part.

The other trees in the background right and behind the main trees are simply there to illustrate the general form and the proportions between stem and crown as well as the space that they fill. In the last step you can add some shading to your tree to define the textures or add some colour to add more realistic textures and tone, particularly on the leaves and the bark of the tree. Temperatures are getting more comfortable this week and daylight stays longer. The season for afternoon and evening excursions is near. In coming days I want to do a couple of drawing studies on twigs and branches.The beginning is made with a stack of apple tree timber on a meadow. I started with a slow, controlled hand to draw the outline of some cut twigs. The dark shape was good to see against a bright background. Also the sun helped to see the volume of the twigs too.

Once you are done you should end up with a tree that looks like the one above. All you have to do now is color it in and you are done. If you want you can even add some grass, a swing, or maybe even a picnic scenario. You have just learned how to Draw an Oak tree step by step.

I started to draw the pine tree from the top. At first the shape of the tree top was drawn as outline. I looked at the tree ,not at my paper and followed the outline I could see against the light sky. That is called blind drawing,if you don´t know about this check the link.
