Yes, most characters get the simplified ear but it comes in handy to know actual, real anatomy. (hint, hint) This image to the right shows the two most common ears: the first has a hanging lobe and the second has the lobe directly attached. Other than that, the ear has the outer helix which shows up quite frequently in the simplified anime ear.

This is easier to see from the back, where the concha is like the tubular part and the helix is the lip part of the megaphone. Maybe this explains Shrek’s freakish deformity… I bet the creators of Shrek were thinking of this during the concept designs.

Perhaps it’s so insignificant in the whole picture since, most of the time, it’s begin covered by hair or other decorative ornaments.

Not because it is hard to draw – but because very few artists think it is important. I mean, after all “it is nothing but an ear!”

Well this is your very first step on how to draw anime ears and all you will have to do is draw a large oblong circle like shape for the ear. At this point you can make the ear as big or as small as you like.

First, let’s start with an outline of a head and the positioning of the ear. See that triangle joining the chin, eye, and ear? That triangle is something I learned in art class and there’s a specific term for it (which I’ve forgotten. <.<) When looking the profile, the ear is at the level of the eye. Perspective is a different matter, but I’ll get into that later.
